Lourdes, the Grotto and Bernadette
The Grotto of Massabielle is a natural cavity hollowed out of the cliff, on the bank of the Gave de Pau. Its name means old rock in the Bigourdan dialect. Before 1858 it was no more than a poor, little-frequented spot where people gathered firewood; today it is the heart of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.
It was there that Bernadette Soubirous, aged fourteen, saw a beautiful Lady eighteen times, between 11 February and 16 July 1858. The message comes down to a few words: prayer, penance, conversion. On 25 March, at the sixteenth apparition, the Lady revealed her name to her: the Immaculate Conception.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes grew up around the Grotto. Pilgrims come to pray, to perform the water gesture at the spring, to accompany someone who is ill, or simply to see the place. The pages that follow help you understand what happened there and prepare your own visit.
