Lourdes Parish: Mass times and Eucharistic adoration

In Lourdes, two distinct realities shape the life of prayer: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, which welcomed more than 3.2 million pilgrims and visitors in 2024 (lourdes-france.org), with its three basilicas and its domain dedicated to pilgrimage, and the local Catholic community, attached to the Diocese of Tarbes-et-Lourdes. What are the Mass times on weekdays and at the weekend?

From Monday to Friday, two Masses are celebrated, at 8:30 am and 6 pm.

On weekdays, the morning Mass mainly gathers regular parishioners, while the evening Mass welcomes more visiting pilgrims. On Saturday, two Masses are likewise celebrated: 8:30 am, then the anticipated Mass at 6 pm. This Saturday evening Mass allows the faithful to fulfil the Sunday precept the evening before, since the Church counts Saturday evening as belonging to the Lord’s Day (CCC § 2180-2182; CIC can. 1248, § 1). On Sunday, two Masses punctuate the day: 8:30 am and 10:30 am. The obligation to take part in Sunday Mass, recalled by the Catechism, thus finds three occasions to be fulfilled between Saturday 6 pm and Sunday 10:30 am.

This daily rhythm distinguishes the parish from the Sanctuary, where several additional Masses are celebrated in foreign languages for international pilgrim groups. The times above concern exclusively the parish church of the Sacred Heart, in the centre of Lourdes, and not the celebrations of the Sanctuary domain. How does Eucharistic adoration work at the parish?

Every day, from 9 am to 5:45 pm, the church remains open for silent Eucharistic adoration.

The Catechism recalls that the worship given to Christ in the Eucharist is not limited to Mass: the Church has always affirmed this cult of adoration “not only during Mass, but also outside of it” (CCC § 1378). Eucharistic adoration consists in recollecting oneself in silence before the Blessed Sacrament, whether exposed or reserved in the tabernacle.

On Thursday, communal adoration extends the 6 pm Mass, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm: it gathers parishioners who wish to pray together after the celebration. From Thursday to Saturday, adoration becomes perpetual, meaning it continues without interruption, including overnight, thanks to shifts of adorers taking turns.

Perpetual adoration: Thursday to Saturday

Adoration described as “perpetual” means that at least one person takes turns being present before the Blessed Sacrament at all times, without interruption. At Lourdes parish, this arrangement applies from Thursday to Saturday, continuing on from the daily adoration of 9 am to 5:45 pm and the Thursday evening communal adoration.

This layered organisation — daily adoration during the day, then a communal extension on Thursday evening, then uninterrupted continuity through to Saturday — allows people with very different availability to find a suitable moment: a working parishioner might join the Thursday evening communal adoration after work, while a pilgrim staying near the church might sign up for a night shift during perpetual adoration. No prior registration is needed for the daily adoration between 9 am and 5:45 pm; night shifts during perpetual adoration, however, are generally organised by parish volunteers, whom it is best to contact through the secretariat in order to take part.

When is the Rosary prayed at the parish?

The Rosary is prayed every day, Monday to Saturday, at 5:15 pm.

The Rosary is a Marian prayer structured around the recitation of the Hail Mary in sets of ten, accompanied by meditation on the mysteries of the life of Christ (CCC § 2678). Alongside this daily appointment, the parish holds several monthly devotions that follow a fixed and easy-to-remember calendar:

• The 29th of the month: a Rosary dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.
• The first Friday of the month: the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, linked to the devotion transmitted by Saint Faustina Kowalska.
• The first Saturday of the month, from 8 am: a Rosary within the tradition of the Five First Saturdays devotion, linked to the Marian apparitions at Fatima (1917).

These monthly appointments are added to the daily 5:15 pm Rosary without replacing it: a parishioner who is faithful to the evening appointment may, in some months, take part twice in the same day if the 29th of the month or the first Friday falls on a day when the ordinary Rosary is also scheduled.

Mass for the Sick and practical information

On the first Monday of each month, at 6 pm, the parish celebrates a Mass specifically dedicated to the sick and their loved ones.

This Mass is a time of prayer and accompaniment for people affected by illness, as well as for their loved ones and carers; it does not constitute a promise or a guarantee of healing. It stands in a long tradition of pastoral attention to the sick, continuing the work of Abbé Peyramale, the founding parish priest, and carrying forward Lourdes’ historic vocation as a place of pilgrimage for people who are sick.

Outside liturgical hours, the parish church remains open every day from 8 am to 7 pm, allowing for a visit or a personal time of prayer outside of services.
